"Painting
and sculpture have alternated in emphasis throughout my
career. I have found this to be a suitable arrangement and
balance to my creative approach.
I
have been a teacher for the past twenty-seven years. This
aspect of my experience is integral to the development of
my work and the under - lying philosophy.
Over
the course of my career I have explored the themes which
interested me and this flexibility has allowed me to rediscover
paths I had forgotten. Thus after some years of being mainly
preoccupied with sculpture, a vase of flowers reawakened
a fascination with paint and colour which continues to give
me inspiration.
Both
the formal and poetic developments within the work are of
the highest importance to me."
Biography
"It
was in the late 50's that I finished my training at the
Leeds College of Art (not to be confused with the present
College of that name) and was successful in winning a place
at the Slade School in London for two years of postgraduate
study. I went there as a painter but progressively my interest
and emphasis turned towards sculpture and in my final year
there I won the Gubenkian Scholarship for Sculpture which
made it possible for my wife and myself to spend a year
in Rome at the British School, pursuing the developments
of our work in a centre of culture which had depth in terms
of its history and vibrance and vitality as its daily currency.
I
should give emphasis to the fact that during the period
of my training in Art it was a time of turbulence and questioning
in Art Education. The then Leeds College of Art was the
epicentre for this re-evaluation under such influential
teachers as Harry Thubron, Tom Watt, Tom Hudson, Edward
Pullee the Principal at that time, and many more visionary
and gifted teachers. The exposure to and participation in
this time of principled evaluation and change continues
to be influential in my teaching and the painting and sculpture
which I continue to make.
In
the early 60's I came back to Leeds to teach and act as
visiting Lecturer at several other colleges. As I indicated
earlier, my emphasis at this time was on sculpture. This
continued to be the case for twenty years. The work was
figurative with a strong focus on form and properties of
ritual alienation. This colouring had its origins in my
childhood and wartime experiences. The body of work, which
I was able to make, has power and cohesion as a language.
However, the overall mood and tone of the work tends in
terms of its thematic nature to be sombre and portentious.
This
phase of work changed quite dramatically and unpredictably
in the mid -mid 80's when I started to paint again. I began
working from flower motifs, painting in oils. It was like
a new awakening for me creatively. The work was affirmative,
presenting a smile or a gift to heal wounds and embellish
life. The enthusiasm for and commitment to making this work
continues to be with me I am pleased to say, although, alongside
it, some of my paintings reflect the sombre moods and themes
of the earlier sculptures."
