on Peter Bell
In
February 2004 Peter Bell walked in my Gallery and showed
me his work. Almost instantly I was captured by the work
that I was viewing. In the eight years that I have had the
Gallery there has never been an artist who has walked in
off the street that has impressed me more than Peter.
The
content of Peter's work depicting everyday events many with
a working class theme, show a real imagination and a sense
of real vision. When viewing Peter's work it would be easy
not to look beyond the instant image of a mass of people
walking, or the knotted handkerchief, the flat cap, the
heads down. But when the viewer can see the meaning of the
painting, life of the people going to work in the factory,
there heads now looking at the ground contemplating the
days work ahead.
In
other paintings one sees the opposite, the same people enjoying
themselves, playing on the beach with their family, or simply
seated on the bench with their spouse, or taking their son
to play football.
Whatever
the mood of man, Peter Bell has the ability to capture him,
at leisure or the monotony of work.
Peter
Bell's natural fluency in subject and composition is all
the more remarkable for someone without formal training
perhaps that is the very reason why his natural ability
as an artist is so refreshing.
When
viewing Peter's work there is a feel of Beryl Cook and L.S
Lowry, I was all most reluctant to make this comparison
when I first saw his work but after speaking to Peter he
mentioned that L.S Lowry was one of the few artist that
Peter admired. Certainly any resemblance of any other artist
cannot deter the originality of Peter's work.
In
the short time that I have know Peter, I feel that his work
draws from his own experience in life, such as working in
a factory in one painting whilst in the next showing the
enjoyment of family in the next.
Without
doubt Peter's own integrity and honesty is abundant in his
work and certainly captures Northern England.
